One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is departing from the board at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a series of digital correspondence between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.

Summers commented in a statement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have participated, excited about the promise of the organization, and eagerly await observing their progress".

The former Harvard president, who previously headed the prestigious university, announced on recently that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

The newly public emails showed that the official corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of his 2019 arrest for accused human trafficking of young people.

In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company stated it accepted Summers' determination to step down.

"We appreciate his many contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the directors," the company stated.

Legislative Background

This announcement arrives after the entire Congress of the legislative branch decided on Tuesday to pass a legislation that would require the US justice department to release its files on Jeffrey Epstein.

The legislation will afterward move to the desk of US President Donald Trump for approval. He has indicated he plans to approve the bill, after changing his stance on the issue following objections from his base.

A group of financier-linked messages released by the legislative panel days ago referenced several prominent individuals in the financier's past associates, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those people.

The emails revealed that Summers and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often trying to link Summers to prominent international personalities.

After the messages were released with the public, the former official expressed he accepted "full responsibility for my ill-advised choice to maintain interacting with the financier".

He added that he wanted "to reestablish trust and fix bonds with the individuals closest to me".

Professional History

The professor occupied senior posts under party leaders; functioning as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under the former leader.

He led the university from the early 2000s and remains a faculty member there. When stating his withdrawal from public commitments recently on this week, he indicated he would maintain his academic responsibilities.

Following his statement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a progressive policy institute in DC where he was a researcher, confirmed that Summers was ceased to be connected with the institution.
