Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and more than a dozen additional individuals sustained injuries in an apparently intentional blast caused by gas at a country home in Italy's north.

The explosion occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the residence close to the Verona region to execute an removal notice for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.

Each of the three deceased individuals belonged to the Italian military police.

Two individuals were arrested at the scene and another man who escaped subsequent to the incident was apprehended shortly later. All three have been admitted to the hospital.

The explosion could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the location revealed the structure left as a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to remove the three family members in the previous occasions.

Background and Motive

The head of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, stated the farmhouse was facing an court order due to debts incurred by the three owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been sent to engage the family members who had secured themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the residents caused the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno stated to the media.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the explosion directly hit our members,” he said.

Incendiary devices were also located at the property, the interior minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the explosion consisted of 11 other members of the police force as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a firefighter.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

The official believed the explosion had taken place on a level above the entrance and informed the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the explosion, he said members had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas canisters being activated”.
